Volunteer Tutor / Friendship Program
Tutor
Qualified volunteers assist newcomers in strengthening their English skills in an one-on-one setting.
This is a program designed to facilitate the instruction of English to immigrants in our community. It is a supplement to the English classes taught at the Portage Learning & Literacy Centre (PLLC).
Tutors provide assistance with improving conversational English, assist learners with homework lessons, pronunciation, vocabulary, and introducing additional topics for interaction based on the learners' interests and needs.

For prospective tutors interested in getting involved, they may request a tutor's package at the PLLC. The package includes a job description, helpful information about teaching adult learners, and documents required.
Friendship
The Friendship program supplements settlement services that are provided through the Immigrant Resource program. It ensures continuity and support, for the integration of newcomers into a new community, making them feel welcome and independent through the transition.
The program is oriented to assist newcomers to settle successfully into our community. It creates opportunities to develop a friendship with an individual immigrant or family. This program is on a more informal basis that promotes communication with the intent to improve the newcomers' English skills, utilizing community experiences such as shopping, banking, registering for school, etc.
Friendship volunteers are matched to an individual or family. Participation is at a level that is comfortable and agreed upon by both parties.
